WHAT IS A PROTECTED DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN?
The acronym PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) accompanies certain cheeses from Italy's rich cheesemaking tradition.
A ‘Designation of Origin’ of an agricultural product is a name which identifies a product: originating in a specific place, region or, in exceptional cases, a country whose quality or characteristics are essentially or exclusively due to a particular geographical environment with its inherent natural and human factors and
the production steps of which all take place in the defined geographical area.
All PDO products follow traditional rules codified in a precise production specification registered with the European Commission. Only products that pass the strict examination are allowed to use the PDO designation and the yellow and red EU symbol.
WHAT IS A PROECTED GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION?
A ‘Geographical Indication’ of an agricultural product is a name which identifies a product originating in a specific place, region or country whose given quality, reputation or other characteristic is essentially attributable to its geographical origin; and at least one of the production steps of which takes place in the defined geographical area.
PGI products also follow a precise production specification registered with the European Commission after a strict recognition procedure and are identified by the typical yellow and blue EU symbol.
